Let’s Talk About Earth Day

POSTED BY FRANNE GOLDE · APRIL 21 2021

April is Earth Month, and we’re sure you’ll be seeing lots of emails and posts about Earth Day this week. We are a growing company, and we’re always looking for ways to move toward greater sustainability for the good of people and planet. We wanted to take a few moments to tell you about where we are, what we’re doing, and how we want to keep becoming better citizens of our one and only planet.

Building a Better Wardrobe

Our philosophy has always been that you don’t need a lot of clothes, just the right ones. That’s why we focus on perfecting comfortable, timeless styles that you can wear endless ways. As of 2015, it was reported that the average garment is worn only seven times before it’s discarded. (We’ve all been guilty!) We’re here to help you get a lot more wear out of every piece you own.

Off-Setting the Impact

You may have noticed a new checkbox on our shopping cart page over the last few weeks. We already ship all our orders in recycled boxes and biodegradable bags. Now we’re partnering with EcoCart to give you the option to off-set the carbon impact of shipping on every order you place. Simply check the box marked “Make my order carbon neutral” and, with a small added fee, your purchase will include a contribution to the Garcia River Project in Mendocino, CA. Sometimes doing good really is that easy.

Retiring Responsibly

Remember those barely-worn garments we mentioned earlier? They contribute to the over 13 million tons of clothing thrown away each year in the United States alone. These garments sit in landfills where they break down slowly and release methane gas into the atmosphere. We want to make sure we’re not contributing to that waste, and that’s why we’re working with Delivering Good to donate over 300 units of retired styles to an amazing SoCal charity.

As you build your long-lasting wardrobe, we know you’ll find pieces in your closet that you no longer need. Luckily, there are a lot of simple ways you can give your garments a second life. You can sell your old clothes with thredUp, or use the box from any FG order to donate used items through Give Back Box. Have some particularly well-loved pieces that have seen a better day? Check out Earth911 for ways to recycle rather than throw away.

Moving Forward

This is only the beginning for us. We believe that every person—and every brand—has a part to play in making fashion better for the earth and those who live on it. We’re actively looking for ways we can be more sustainable with our fabrics, our production practices, and more. And we’d love to hear from you! Let us know if you have ideas, suggestions, or questions as we take this journey together. We’re glad to be growing with you.

love,
The Franne Golde team
